What Are the Differences Between Distribution Boxes and Distribution Cabinets?2026-01-10

I. Conceptual Differences Between Distribution Boxes and Distribution Cabinets

(1) Distribution Box

A distribution box is a small power distribution unit that includes switches and protective devices such as fuses. It has a relatively simple structure and is mostly used for terminal power distribution. It is the final-level distribution equipment in a power supply system. A distribution box can have one incoming power line and multiple outgoing circuits, distributing electricity to various loads. Due to its small size, it cannot accommodate large electrical equipment, so its capacity is limited. Typically, one distribution box serves 4–8 small loads and is installed near the center of the load area, delivering power via cables or wires.

(2) Distribution Cabinet

A distribution cabinet is a higher-level distribution device than a distribution box, with a larger size that allows installation of more substantial electrical equipment. It is generally used for medium-capacity loads and may include distribution boxes, motors, and other components. Its applicable capacity varies across different industrial applications, typically ranging from several kilowatts to dozens of kilowatts. In addition to leakage and short-circuit protection provided by traditional distribution boxes, it also offers functions such as overvoltage protection, arc fault disconnection, lightning protection, automatic power supply, temperature protection, power limitation, fault recording, self-diagnosis, learning memory, and mobile connectivity with visualization and digitalization features.

II. Functional Differences

A distribution box is an enclosure used for distributing electrical energy. It controls electrical equipment, distributes power, and provides protection against overload, short circuit, and leakage. Distribution boxes are widely installed in various locations such as schools, institutions, hospitals, factories, workshops, and homes, including lighting distribution boxes and power distribution boxes. They are compact in size and can be installed flush-mounted in walls or placed on the ground.

Both distribution boxes and distribution cabinets are essential infrastructure in everyday life.
